Diversity Statement
I strongly believe that creating inclusive and equitable learning environments is central to effective education. My professional and personal experiences have shaped a deep understanding of the challenges that learners from diverse backgrounds face, and the importance of fostering environments where all students can thrive.
Over more than a decade teaching internationally, and later as the International Student Support Officer at Algoma University, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that international students face upon arriving in Canada, including differences in culture, education systems, language, customs, and daily life. I also observed instances of discrimination and misunderstanding that highlighted the need for intentional inclusion. These experiences fueled my commitment to building supportive, culturally responsive programs and communities.
At Algoma University, I co-developed and led initiatives designed to promote cross-cultural understanding and equity. I established the Algoma Student Ambassador Program (ASAP), pairing incoming international students with domestic peers to break down racial silos and foster meaningful relationships. I co-hosted annual cultural events—including Lunar New Year, J-Night, Brazilian Night, and Ede, providing platforms for international students to share their traditions and for the broader community to engage with diverse perspectives. As Coordinator of the Algoma Homestay Program, I provided diversity training for host families to ensure inclusive, culturally aware experiences.
These professional experiences, coupled with my own intercultural family life, have strengthened my cultural competency, empathy, and awareness of the diverse needs of learners. In my work as an instructional designer and ESL educator, I apply these principles by promoting Universal Design for Learning (UDL), ensuring that every student has equitable opportunities to succeed. I believe that barriers to learning are often embedded in design rather than the student, and I strive to create curriculum and learning environments that reflect this philosophy.
If given the opportunity to join your institution, I would bring this combination of classroom teaching, instructional design expertise, and cultural awareness to support international students, faculty, and staff. I am committed to developing inclusive, high-quality curriculum that meets the needs of a diverse learner population, helping all students feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to succeed.
