Task Achievement

Task Achievement (TA) is how well the question is answered. If all parts of the question are dealt with and the ideas are logical or the data is accurate and well summarized, then TA will be high.

In IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, Task Achievement measures how well you fulfill the following requirements:

1. Task Response

Have you covered all key points in the prompt?

Each task includes a situation and three bullet points that must be covered. If you miss any part, your response is incomplete, lowering your score.

2. Appropriateness of Tone

Are you using the correct tone in your writing?

For Writing Task 1, your letter should be either formal or informal based on the context.

When writing to a friend, the tone must be informal, and when writing to anyone else, the tone must be formal.

Even if the content of the letter is suitable, including the inappropriate tone will result in a low Task Achievement score.

If there are many mistakes with the tone, that will result in a band 4 for Task Achievement, while some mistakes will result in a band 5, and even one mistake will result in a band 6.

To get a band 7, 8 or 9, the tone of the answer must be appropriate from start to finish.

3. Clarity & Development

Are your ideas well-developed and easy to understand?

Even if you address all points in the task, a lack of clarity or weak idea development can lower your score. Your message must be clear, direct, and easy to follow. If your writing is confusing, vague, or lacks structure, the examiner may struggle to understand your response

How to Achieve Clarity?:

  • Use simple, precise language – Avoid overly complicated words if they don’t add meaning.
  • Structure sentences logically – Keep ideas organized and avoid long, unclear sentences.
  • Make your purpose obvious – Don’t leave the reader guessing why you’re writing.

4. Relevant Details

Have you provided enough detail to support your message?

Relevant details refer to the specific information you provide to support your main points. These details help develop your ideas, make your letter clear and persuasive, and show your ability to communicate effectively in English.

If your details are too vague or off-topic, your score for Task Achievement will drop. Providing well-chosen, relevant details makes your letter more convincing and natural.

Why are Relevant Details important?:

  • They add clarity - The examiner can easily understand your message.
  • They develop your ideas - Instead of listing points, you explain them logically.

5. Clear Purpose

Is the purpose of your letter clear, logical and easy to follow?

Purpose refers to how well you communicate why you are writing the letter. If your purpose is unclear, inconsistent, or incomplete, it will lower your score.

How to Ensure a Clear Purpose:

  • State your purpose clearly - You first paragraph should clearly introduce the reason for your writing.
  • Stay focused - every part of your letter should connect to your purpose.
  • Be direct and polite - avoid vague or confusing statements.

In this lesson, we will look a little closer at the importance of Task Response, Relevant Details as well as the use of Appropriate of Tone in Writing Task 1.
