The First and Second Conditionals can both be used to describe the future:
- First Conditional: If it rains tomorrow, I will take my umbrella.
- Second Conditional: If it rained tomorrow, I would take my umbrella.
What is the difference?
- The first conditional describes something that is possible and could really happen.
- The second conditional describes something that is possible but will almost certainly not happen.
How do we know when to use them?
Often the only difference between the first and the second conditional is the speaker’s opinion.
