1.5.2 Simple, Compound & Complex Sentences

Sentence formation is one of the key ingredients to good writing. There are several forms of sentences you can use in your writing - simple, compound, and complex - and knowing how to use all of them will allow you to express your ideas with clarity and in great detail. You'll also be able to add variety to your work to keep the reader interested. Complex sentence structures are also used to enhance our speaking abilities when communicating in English.

Here is an example of the various types of sentences structures covered in the video:

Simple: We ate the apples,  They were delicious.

Compound: We ate the apples and they were delicious.

Complex:  We ate the apples because they were delicious.

We cannot just say, "because they were delicious" because the sentence is not complete.  Complex sentences give the listener and reader more detail about what is being discussed.

In the following activity, you will practice making simple, compound, and complex sentences as well as learn more about main (independent) clauses, and subordinate (dependent) clauses.
