In this lesson, you’ll learn exactly what examiners are looking for in your speaking and how they will decide your score.
Criteria for IELTS General Training Speaking Score
In the IELTS Speaking, an examiner will assign a score for each of these four criteria:
This assesses how smoothly and logically you speak. You should be able to express ideas clearly, maintain a steady flow of speech, and use linking words effectively without excessive hesitation or repetition.
This evaluates your ability to use a wide range of vocabulary appropriately and accurately. You should demonstrate flexibility in word choice, use idiomatic expressions naturally, and paraphrase when needed.
This measures your ability to use a variety of grammatical structures correctly. You should aim for accuracy in tenses, sentence structures, and complex forms while minimizing grammatical errors.
This assesses how clear and understandable your speech is. Factors include proper word stress, intonation, and pronunciation of individual sounds. You don’t need a native-like accent, but your speech should be easily comprehensible.
Important
- The final score you receive for the IELTS General Writing section is an average of the four criteria.
